Japanese; How to say the time?

Ima nanji desu ka. = What time is it?

Ima= now
Nan = what
Ji = time
Desu = is
Ka = ?

In Japanese when asking a question the question mark is actually the word ka. That's why in Japanese you write ka and not ?.

Hour

In Japanese when you say what hour is it you will say the hour number + ji.

For example:

9:30 = 9 ji 30

12:01 = 12 ji 01

Easy isn't it?

Minutes

This is the tough part, because it depends on the last number of the minute. First let me provide you with the list to explain it clearly.

1 pun
2 fun
3 pun
4 fun
5 fun
6 ppun (roppun)
7 fun (nanafun)
8 ppun (happun)
9 fun (kyūfun)
10 ppun (juppun)

What are the words in ()?

The number 6 in Japanese is roku, but when telling the time you only say ro. Number 7 in Japanese is there are two ways to say 7 shishi and nana. For the time you say nana. Number 8 in Japanese is hachi. When telling the time you only say ha. Number 10 in Japanese is jū. When telling time if ends as ten is ju. When it ends with 0 is ppun. like the numbers 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50. If its 00 it is not mentioned.

How to say the minute in Japanese?

In the list you see pun, ppun, and fun. Those are the words you say when you finish saying the minute. The words depends on the last number of the minute.

Example:

10:30 = 10 ji 30 ppun

1:25 = 1 ji 25 fun

3:33 = 3 ji 33 pun

6:16 = 6 ji 16 ppun
(Japanese: roku ji jū roppun)

A.M and P.M.

a.m. = gozen
p.m. = gogo

When saying it together the a.m. and p.m. goes first not last. Japanese speaks in Yoda style. You will see it clearly in the conclusion.

Example:

12:00a.m = a.m.12:00
(gozen 12 ji 00 ppun)

3:36p.m. = p.m.3:36
(Gogo 3 ji 36 ppun)

From and Until

From = kara
Until = made

I know what you are thinking made is not pronounced like the english word made. It's pronounced in the Spanish way. Ma de.

How we use made and kara? Remeber the Yoda? Yes, we put kara, and made after we say the time.

Example:

From 9:30a.m. = a.m.9:30 kara
(Gozen 9 ji 30 ppun kara)

Until 6:00pm = p.m.6:00 made
(Gogo 6 ji 00 ppun made)

How to ask time?

Ima nan ji desu ka.

Ima = now
Nan = what
Ji = time
Desu = is
Ka = ?

I already explain the meaning at the begining. Ima nan ji desu ka means; What time is it? Sharly, how do we say it with from and until?

(N) wa nanji kara desu ka.

Noun = is where you put the place
Wa = particle (marks the subject of sentence/question)
Nan = what
Ji = time
Kara = from
Desu = is
Ka = ?

The same applies for made. Except kara you replace it with made. (N) wa nanji made desu ka. What do you mean noun? When I put (N) means the place you want to know when it's open like movies, mall, restaurant, train, etc. Just put the name of the place and then wa nanji kara desu ka. What happens if I want to know both from and until? How do I ask the question? Simple just put from time until time. Don't worry in writing you don't use the ,

(N) wa nanji kara nanji made desu ka.

Conclusion

How we tell the time? Remember desu means is. So it's simple say the time and end it with desu. The Yoda way.

It's 9:22p.m. = p.m.9:22 is.
(Gogo 9 ji 22 fun desu)

It's until 9:22p.m. = p.m.9:22 until is.
(Gogo 9 ji 22 fun kara desu)

Practice

Comment below what does this means, and I will gladly let you know if it's right or wrong. Don't worry I will use the name of the places in English.

1. Ima nanji desu ka.
Gozen 10 ji 24 fun desu.

2. Movie wa nanji gozen desu ka.
Gogo 8 ji gozen desu.

3. Restaurant wa nanji gozen nanji kara desu ka.
Gozen 9 ji 30 ppun kara gogo 7 ji 30 ppun made desk.
